Challenge

Every shopping centre combined physical constraints, external contractors, networking, payment hardware, customer operations and a fixed go live window. Integration risk sat at the boundaries between systems and suppliers.

Outcome

Led more than 20 successful UK and Spain deployments, with over 100 PCI payment devices commissioned across 22 locations using controlled chain of custody procedures, and a distributed operating estate brought under repeatable technical and field service controls.

A portfolio, not a single installation

A live parking deployment was never one product. It joined ANPR cameras, entry and exit hardware, payment kiosks, barriers, intercoms, signage, local networking, servers, civil and electrical works, software configuration, customer processes and commissioning into one service used by the public.

I led this work first as Deployment Manager and later as Director of European Deployments and Field Services, delivering more than 20 deployments across the UK and Spain and commissioning over 100 payment devices across 22 locations. These were PCI controlled devices, so commissioning required documented chain of custody from receipt and secure storage through installation, testing and operational handover.

That scale demanded repeatability. My focus was creating a delivery approach that could move between sites, suppliers, countries and operating teams without losing control of the technical interfaces.

Major shopping centre deployments

My deployment portfolio included:

  • Eden Shopping Centre, High Wycombe: ticketless parking deployment in a live centre, spanning site survey, solution design, procurement, configuration, barrier lane works, commissioning, training and go live.
  • The Rock Shopping Centre, Bury: installation and commissioning of ten ANPR lanes in an operating shopping centre.
  • Luton Shopping Centre / The Mall, Luton: a complex parking transformation within an operating centre, involving ANPR, payments, barriers, intercom, CCTV, networking, suppliers and operational coordination.
  • Centro Comercial Zubiarte, Bilbao: REEF’s first Spanish launch site. I led the deployment team through installation, commissioning and go live.
  • SOM Multiespai, Barcelona: a ticketless deployment integrating 18 ANPR cameras, nine barriers, nine intercoms, nine displays, 11 CCTV cameras and five payment kiosks through to operational handover.

At East Kilbride Shopping Centre, Scotland, my contribution focused on solution design. I created the technical architecture and implementation proposal for the estate across four gated and two surface parking areas.

The wider operating estate

My deployment and field services function supported a broad operating estate across the UK and Spain, including:

Centro Comercial Zubiarte; SOM Multiespai; Blackwall; Edmonton Green Shopping Centre; Arena Birmingham; St Enoch Shopping Centre; Pentagon Shopping Centre; Castlegate Shopping Centre; White River Place; Feltham Centre; Eden Shopping Centre; The Rock Shopping Centre; Grosvenor Centre; Spindles and Town Square Shopping Centre; Westgate; and Vicar Lane Shopping Centre.

That estate demonstrates the geographic and technical breadth of the environment I helped govern. My role covered deployment leadership as well as ongoing field service and operational support, with responsibilities varying by site.

Site surveys across Europe

Before installation came travel and investigation. I completed parking and infrastructure site surveys in the Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland and Spain, as well as many locations throughout England and the wider UK.

The work meant walking vehicle and customer routes, checking equipment positions and communications paths, assessing electrical and civil requirements, testing assumptions against real plant rooms and car parks, documenting constraints, and turning the findings into a solution design, bill of materials and executable delivery plan.

From survey to go live

My scope crossed the entire deployment lifecycle:

  1. Survey and define: understand the site, customer journey, operating constraints and technical dependencies.
  2. Design and procure: produce solution designs and bills of materials, then align hardware, networking, payments, contractors and lead times.
  3. Install and integrate: coordinate work, often overnight, in live car parks while keeping the centre operational.
  4. Configure and commission: personally work through devices, networks, software, intercoms, payments and complete lane behaviour.
  5. Train and go live: prepare operators, manage cutover and remain closely involved during early operation and field support.
  6. Standardise the estate: improve security, PCI controls, device custody, monitoring and repeatable field service practices across locations.

What this demonstrates

This programme was project management at the point where software, networks, payment compliance, physical equipment, contractors and public operations meet. I could operate at director level across countries and suppliers while still being present for the overnight installations, commissioning and go live problems that determined whether a site actually worked.

That combination of portfolio leadership with genuine technical and field proximity is the thread connecting this European work to the large engineering and software programmes I lead today.
